Abstract

Ratoon cropping is an important practice in tropical agriculture, parti-cularly in the sugarcane, banana and pineapple industries where it frequen-tly provides a significant margin of profit for growers. Despite its impor-tance, however, for many years ratoo-ning could be considered as a neglec-ted area of agricultural research, for even research organizations for ratooned crops such as sugarcane seldom devo-ted much effort or resources to the study of improved ratoon systems (Plucknett et al. 1970).
