Abstract

An appraisal of nutrient status of soils and crop productivity was made at the Pennar alluvial deposits at the Sugarcane Research Station,Cuddalore. With the recognition of availsbility concepts of soil nutrients, soil chemists tried to correlate crop productivity with nutrient contents, and attempted to fix optimum concentration of these nutrients in soils at which the yields will be optimum without the addition of nutrients. Some of the major contributions on this aspect with reference to sugarcane is summarised (Ranganathan 1966).
