Abstract

Little leaf-A transmissible disease of brinjal (Solanum melongena) by K. M. Thomas and C. S. Krishnaswami: Proceedings of the Indian Academy of Science. Vol. X, No. 2. August 1939; 201-212 2 Pl. A disease of brinjal (Solanum melongena) causing reduction in the size of leaves, shortening of internodes, stimulation of axillary buds, phyllody and sterility, prevalent in many parts of South India was investigated by the authors. The disease was found to be transmissible from diseased to healthy plants by grafting, and not by sap inoculation. A jassid Rutettix phyoitis' found on brinjal in Coimbatore was able to transmit the disease under experimental conditions. and would appear to be the chief vector of the disease in the field. The disease has a wide host range among solanaceous plants. Tomato, tobacco, Datura fastuosa, Solanum xanthocarpum, and S. trilobatum are the hosts mentioned. The disease could be controlled by roguing affected plants, and removal of solanace-ous weeds from the field.
